PVI rolling out color, flexible and touch-capable eInk displays in 2010
Grayscale eInk displays on most ebook readers might be easy on the eyes, but they’re not particularly great as far as colored images and illustrations are concerned. One might read a novel without too many problems but the experience of going through a magazine or some comic book will be another story. Because of this, the demand for eBook readers featuring color, touch-enabled displays is on the rise, and that’s why Prime View International has recently announced that they’ll be rolling out such displays solutions over the course of 2010.
According to DigiTimes, besides color and flexible EPDs or electrophoretic displays, Prime View International also plans to start manufacturing some touch-capable EPDs and other EPDs that support animation in 2010. In other words, we might see some ultra-thin or even paper-thin eBook readers arrive on the market by CES 2011. And hopefully, even some rollable ones.
The fact that more and more eBook reader manufacturers are pushing demand for such advanced display solutions is quite encouraging, so, we’ll have a lot more options to choose from in the future, and the biggest players in the field will also be faced with some serious competition.
Moreover, Prime View International will probably be not the only manufacturer walk this direction and others will surely follow. Meaning that this will probably become the dominating trend over the course of 2010 and 2011, and grayscale devices will be a thing of the past, a small stepping stone in the evolution of the eReader concept.
