Google pushes updates for the Nexus One phone, finally includes multi-touch capability

Probably somewhat threatened by Steve Jobs’ statements at the recent meeting with Apple employees and also decided to bring their Nexus One android smartphone into 2010, Google has finally enabled one of the functions most users were eagerly waiting for, namely multi-touch, as well as several other interesting updates. We are talking about the famous pinch-to-zoom functionality, which will be available in the phone’s Browser, Gallery and Maps applications.

Speaking of Maps, Google also has updated the Maps application to version 3.4, which will include starred items synchronized with maps.google.com allowing users to access their favorite places from their phone or PC. Users can search suggestions from one’s personal maps.google.com history and a night mode in Google Maps Navigation, which will automatically change the screen at night for easier viewing and driving.

Another interesting inclusion is the availability of Google Goggles, this mobile application being now available directly on the device by launching it from the All Apps menu. The company will also provide a general fix to help improve 3G connectivity on some Nexus One phones.

Nexus One owners should be aware that this update will become available in the form of a message on the phone’s notification bar. Users will only have to download the software update and wait for it to install. However, we’re talking about a gradual roll-out, so some users might have to wait until the end of the week in order to acquire the updates.
