FCC gets the Congress’ opinion on Net Neutrality

Two representatives of the Congress have filed separate bills with the same intention of pulling the plug on the FCC’s power. Net Neutrality has been quite an issue among techies and internet users alike but with the Congress putting their foot forward and stepping on FCC, the Net Neutrality policy from FCC may not even come to fruition.

Sen. John McCain and Rep. Marsha Blackburn issued an anti-net neutrality bill with McCain’s bill being called “Internet Freedom Act of 2009″ and Blackburn’s being “Real Stimulus Act of 2009″. Both bills have the same “The Federal Communications Commission shall not propose, promulgate, or issue any regulations regarding the Internet or IP-enabled services.” line.

The two lawmakers find that by implementing net neutrality, the net would not be neutral but rather be more one sided, FCC sided that is. By allowing a government takeover of the Internet according to McCain, the industry’s ability to protect intellectual property as well as its ability to crack down piracy will be hampered according to Blackburn.

Although the bills are anti-Net neutrality, with clauses like the one stated above, it might not just stop at net neutrality but the FCC and IP regulations in general.

McCain could not have said it any better when he claimed, “Regulation kills innovation”, “Let’s not kill the Internet.”
